Today our asset tokens have limited functionality, especially when compared to other token tools in our space. The community is requesting some enhancements:

  • Ensure asset tokens can be refreshed when pulled

    • Today there is a known issue due to image caching (Github # 2401) where the plugin does not refresh images after server update in multi-themes setup.

  • Add support for different fill image settings (Github #3233)

    • Fill

    • Fit

    • Tile

  • Add support for SVG's or icon library management

😬 The reality

At the time of writing, assets (or File) is not an official token type in the DTCG W3C specs, but is mentioned as likely to be included (8.8 Additional types).

  • Other organizations who have deviated from the spec are supporting icons as a part of their token management offering.

    Is this getting any traction at all? What’s the recommended workaround for now?

    We have a lot of svg assets organized into sets that today we manually have to export one after the other to handoff to devs.

    Adding & Updating are quite painful & this feature would save many many manhours

      [Keegan] - Heyy! We certainly understand the requirement for this, however the team is currently very busy with work on the Tokens Studio platform, and with regards to the plugin we’re busy with Figma’s upcoming change on shared plugin data. That being said, I will check with the team if this is something we would like to focus on in the near future!

    We use tokens studio also for our svg icons. For that we copy as svg in Figma and insert the code in the Assets field in tokens studio.

    Pro:

    • development can access the icon via token

    • one more thing in the single source of truth

    con:

    • this svg tokens cannot be used in Figma

      • Figma allows to insert the raw svg code and converts it into a svg graphic layer

      • that would be awesome, if this would be possible with tokens studio (creates an empty frame > insert code)

    Just noticed this post. We have a workaround using a custom Figma plugin that exports SVGs as SVG_STRING to a dedicated icon collection which are exported by TS as text tokens. Then SD + SVGO cleans up the SVG and converts them to React components.

    It’s bespoke to our workflow but works for us.

    The plugin currently doesn’t track changes but it’s something I’m going to implement when I get time.

    Like you say, it’s non-standard but way better than manually exporting.
